"I'M NOT HER"

Written 2019-01-20

You’ll probably see me

an offbeat character at this party

a plain, simple girl-next-door

wondering what she could possibly offer

What? Who??

No, no way

I’m wondering if you do

see me like I see you too

the one who’s not really into this crowd

a phone in your hand, so distracted

I love how we talk

‘cause I’d love to interact

Perhaps we both stand out

slightly detached

from this current crowd

Still, I’m not her

I’m not insecure

nor a slut-shamer

I’m just not into being flirtatious

not even to guys like you

She can do what she likes with you

Nobody owns anybody

I’m as realistic as can be

I still smile politely

as she clings to you like you’re her boy

Maybe you are

No worries, I may never get that far

Soon this party is over

The night’s getting darker

We’ve exchanged numbers

but I ain’t calling you first

I just don’t hope for too much

I know where I stand

I’m just enjoying this moment

some rare, genuine,

friendly gestures from a handsome man

Maybe we’ll see each other again

Maybe we won’t

It’s just a temporary illusion

for me to enjoy, before it’s completely gone...
