English Translation

Better than the whole wide world is our India;

we're its nightingales, it is our flower-garden.

when we're away our heart remains with our motherland;

visualize us being at the place where our heart is.

The mountain that's tallest of all , a neighbour to the sky;

it is our sentinel, it is our protector.

In it lap are playing thousands of rivers;

due to their existence our garden is the envy of the paradise.

O stream of the Ganges! Do you remember the days

when our caravan terminated at your banks?

Greece, Egypt and Rome all have vanished from the face of earth; (Their ancient civilisations)

yet our imprints are still undiminished.

There's something for our existence doesn't efface;

[though] the cycle of time has been our adversary for centuries.

O Iqbal! There's no confidant of ours in the whole world;

no one knows the grief that's shrouded in [our hearts].

This is the National Song of India.
